Dogs in My Life
by Kristin Heiden

Dogs have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. When I was first introduced to the sport of dog shows, I was hooked. Because of this I have spent the last 11 years training and showing dogs in the AKC along with helping teach my local 4-H dog club. Dogs have just always had an important role in my life.

When I first started college my major was biological sciences. I liked this concentration, but something just seemed to be lacking. Because of my college career I have been forced to cut back on my dog showing, and because of that I realized that I really miss having animals in my life so much. I am not allowed to have a dog on campus so my only time with them is when I go home or go to a show. This made me change my mind as to what I want to do for a future career. I realized that I would like to have a career that lets me deal with animals all the time. I am now an animal science major with a pre-vet concentration. With this as my major I see more and more doors opening for my future.

My future in the world of purebred dogs will continue to grow. I will continue to show and train dogs for the conformation show ring, and hopefully also get more involved with the performance events. Along with this I have gotten involved with Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever breeders and Great Dane breeders from whom I have learned quite a bit. My new major will allow me to help not only purebred dogs, but all animals big and small. I also can be very active in my community by providing a service for the town's animal owners. Without the influence of purebred dogs in my life, I never would have had the opportunities that have been opened to me. And I will ALWAYS have a dog in my life!
