Around the Country:
How Clubs Are Promoting Responsible Dog Ownership
|
May 2010 |
Success in the fight to protect our rights as dog owners, exhibitors, and breeders would not be possible without the grassroots efforts of organizations, clubs, and state federations throughout the United States. Periodically, the AKC Government Relations Department highlights unique and effective things that these groups do to promote positive canine legislation and responsible dog ownership. Here are two examples of recent activities by AKC state federations.
The Responsible Dog Owners Alliance (RPOA), AKC’s state federation for Texas, recently honored Texas State Representative Edmund Kuemple at the San Antonio Kennel Club dog show. Kuemple, the inaugural recipient of the AKC’s James S. Holt Award for Excellence in Canine Legislation, was presented by RPOA members with a plaque thanking him for his efforts on behalf of dog owners and breeders. Rep. Kuempel was also presented with a check in support of his reelection campaign from the AKC's Political Action Committee to thank him for his exemplary contributions in support of responsible dog ownership in Texas. Learn more about Kuemple’s efforts during the 2009 legislative session.

The Dog Federation of Wisconsin (DFOW), AKC’s state federation for Wisconsin, recently hosted a lobby day at the Wisconsin State Capitol to educate lawmakers about responsible dog ownership. DFOW also conducted an awards ceremony in conjunction with the event to honor legislators, legislative staff, and organizations who partnered with them during the 2010 legislative session to help fight proposals that would have infringed on the rights of responsible dog owners in Wisconsin.
