July 2011
The American Kennel Club invites its affiliated clubs and dog-related organizations to host AKC Responsible Dog Ownership (RDO) Days in September. These fun and interactive events celebrate the special bond between humans and their dogs and educate the public about the importance of responsible dog ownership.

“More than 550 organizations across the U.S. held AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day events last year, inviting local community members to take part in Meet the Breeds, AKC CAR microchip clinics, AKC Canine Good Citizen® testing and more,” said AKC spokesperson Lisa Peterson. “We encourage more organizations to join us in 2011 to help us spread this important message in a very fun way!”

Please click here for ideas about organizing and publicizing an AKC RDO Day. The first 500 organizations that confirm AKC RDO Days will receive a complimentary resource-filled packet including posters, brochures, giveaways like pencils and stickers, a Media Idea Kit, and many more materials to assist them in putting together an entertaining and informative event. Click here to create an “Event Account” by August 1, 2011.

Many event organizers invite their local, state and federal representatives to attend and participate in RDO Day events held within their local districts. A great way to gain publicity for your AKC RDO Day is to obtain an official proclamation from your Mayor, Commissioner or Governor. Proclamations are given in recognition of a special event and can help you get media coverage. Click here for information on requesting a proclamation.
