Evaluator guidelines for CGC Evaluators

Congratulations on being approved as an AKC Canine Good Citizen evaluator. AKC CGC evaluators have completed the registration process by filling out the AKC CGC® APPROVED EVALUATOR APPLICATION and they have been approved and assigned an evaluator number by the American Kennel Club.

Evaluators agree to abide by the following:
  1. All items of the CGC test must be given and dogs must pass all 10 items to pass the test.

  2. The test protocol as described in the Evaluator Guide should be followed. Evaluators should not make the test easier by eliminating test items, nor should they require the participant to perform at a higher level than the test requires. For example, an evaluator should not, in the name of "having high standards" require during testing that the dogs complete exercises off-lead in order to pass the CGC test. However, instructors may choose to give the test at any point in a student's training and may require that students have a higher level of training before the test is given.

  3. Evaluator test paperwork should be sent in to the AKC in a timely fashion. This is important because we check participant forms against the forms received by evaluators prior to issuing a certificate. Owners should always be given a copy of the test form so they have written proof of passing the test.
