Coastal Bend Retriever Club of Texas Field Trial
The Coastal Bend Retriever Club of Texas sponsored its' first licensed field trial of the year over the weekend of February 27-29, 2004. The site of the event was the Ben Woodson Ranch and surrounding properties near Rockport, Texas. The weather cooperated very well for the event with sunny skies on Friday, overcast all day Saturday continuing into Sunday with a few, later afternoon sprinkles. Temperatures were in the high sixties to low seventies with winds blowing moderately all three days. With numerous professional and amateur trainers/handlers in the area for winter training, this was an well-attended event with a total of two hundred twenty-five entries. With four very full stakes to run the event ran well into Sunday afternoon.
For those participants who had come from either moderately to extremely cold areas of the country, it was probably strange having to "swat" mosquitos or pick grasshoppers off your pant legs and at the same time pay close attention to the signs that read, "Beware of the Rattlesnakes". Returning to "cooler" temperatures may not have seemed to be such a bad idea!
The Event Committee headed up by Chairman, Pat Kenny had everything in control and assured things ran smoothly throughout the three days. With very nice weather, the dogs were at the peak of their energy levels and with each cast to make a retrieve, you could see the enthusiasm grow. When all was said and done, all the dogs had thoroughly enjoyed themselves and many people attending had renewed old friendships and possibly kindled some new acquaintances.
