Redwood Belgian Tervuren Fanciers - Pre-National All-Breed Test and Trials
by Carol Delsman

Do you know the way to San Jose? Exhibitors from 10 states made their way not only to this infamous town but south on Highway 25 to this rural Central Valley town of Paicines, California. Hosted by Russ Dotson and Michele Krone and their Oak Hill Ranch, this is truly one of the premier herding facilities in the country.

This fertile valley full of orchards and vineyards is surrounded by scrub-covered hills that wrap their arms around you blocking out everything but dogs, sheep and quiet. An old adobe guesthouse is used for judges where they can slip away for a short break or a change of attire.

Everything a herding enthusiast could ask for was supplied, starting with a hot cup of coffee on arrival. RV parking and more than ample parking for exhibitors and spectators. Hundreds of acres to go for a walk or run off that steam from your dogs extended time in a crate on your way to your National. Livestock that were honest, stock handling from experienced trialers. Barbecue over hot wood coals served up dining room style in the covered wind protected area of the shop. It soon became evident that much thought and effort was put into this site and event to assure that the needs and wants of the herding community would be met.

With all of the foul weather that plagued much of the country, many exhibitors came to this early season trial with a minimum of practice. Torrential rains in California to deep snow in the mid-west gave little opportunity for many of these trialers to get ample practice. Even so, there were many good runs for Judges Jerry Rowe and Terry Kenney to chose from. Runs on both course A and B gave many different breeds a chance to show their talents on sheep.

On Saturday, both High in Trial and Reserve High in Trial went to Course A entrants. Snowflower's Oakhill Solitaire HAS-s, HSB-s, a Belgian Tervuren owned by Michele Krone, took top honors from the Intermediate class. He showed that calm, quiet work was the winning combination for a score of 87 under judge Terry Kenney. Not far behind with a score of 84½ came Phantom Meg HXA-s from the Advanced Class. Under the direction of owner Polly Lowry, this border collie also had a smooth quiet run. Later in the day, she also took first place in her Intermediate course B run with a score of 82.

Sunday followed with the same good weather as the previous day. Under the directions of judge Jerry Rowe, the club moved quickly through the classes. As with most events, the second day handlers know much better what to expect from their dogs. While some needed to call the runs, some dogs just got better as the weekend progressed.

High in Trial went to Dawna Sims with her border collie, Molly's Rudy Fire N Ice, from the Intermediate A Course and Reserve High in Trial went to Polly Lowry with her border collie, Phantom Ike HIA-s from the Advanced A Course.

With accommodations just a short drive away in Hollister, this is a site to put on you list of good herding experiences.
