Hunting Tests
Lake Champlain Retriever Club Hunt Test
by Chuck Kimbrel, Executive Field Representative

The Lake Champlain Retriever Club held its 2004 Retriever hunt test on the grounds of The Dead Creek Wildlife Management area outside Addison Vermont. Refuge manager David Sausville did an excellent job if preparation of the grounds for the event, with many areas available for the judges use. Also several weeks prior to the event Chairwoman Miriam Wade had been severely injured in an auto accident. Thankfully, her recovery was proceeding very well and she was able to attend the event.

When the judged arrived on Friday afternoon they were greeted with storms and heavy rains as a cold front moved through the area, by Saturday morning all had cleared and the event was greeted with cool temperatures and brisk winds. Even with the storms of Friday the judges had managed to set up both interesting and demanding test for the contestants.

The"Master," judged by Vicky Trainor and Catherine Forsyth, with apprentice Wayne Forsyth, had an entry of 50 dogs with 25 receiving qualification scores at conclusion.

The "Senior," judged by Kenneth Kogut and Audie Gould, had 20 entries with 12 qualifying at conclusion.

The "Junior," judged by Susan Noble and Richard Kennedy, also had 20 entries, qualified 16 dogs at conclusion.

On Saturday evening the club hosted a dinner and raffle for all of the contestants. One of the more interesting items up for raffle was a United States flag that had flown in Iraq during the present war, this flag was donated by the husband of a member that is presently serving in Iraq.

It appeared that a good time was had by all. The Lake Champlain Club did a great job of preparation before the event, and conducted a quality event for all.
