Las Vegas Hunting Retriever Club
Mentored AKC Hunting Test – By Wayne Bleazard, Executive Field Rep
The Las Vegas Hunting Retriever Club successfully held their first mentored AKC Hunting Test with the help of the Copper State Retriever Club in Overton, NV on the weekend of February 25th/26th, 2012. Bob and Jeannette Smith, Las Vegas Club officers, have been working on this event for quite awhile. It takes a lot of time and effort to get a new club put together in order to receive AKC approval before the first bird is ever thrown. This group did a fantastic job! They did have an advantage in that they were a NARA club in years past so they had a membership to draw from.
Their hunting test was held on the Wildlife Management Area just outside the town of Overton . The grounds consist of cut hay fields and many ponds that are used for duck hunting during the water fowl season. The grounds proved to be excellent for the hunting test.
The Master judges, Joe Reinhart, Carolyn Goll with Senior and Junior judges, Don Aker, Laura Judd set up very good, demanding tests. Judges were all in agreement that the grounds were great and had plenty of help with the contestants running their dogs and taking turns helping with the test. That’s where being an experienced club helped make the event run smooth. There were 76 dogs entered. For their first hunt test that was about right to put on a quality test. They hope to have a lot more dogs next year!
On Saturday night after the tests for the day were done the club held a banquet and raffle to help raise money. Great food and lots of items for the raffle were on the agenda, along with a very nice shotgun as the top prize. (I did not win it!) It was obvious this group had done this before because it was very well organized.
It’s nice to see a new club and new people getting involved in the AKC hunting test program.
