of Most Popular Dogs in America; Lovable Bulldog Continues its Ascent

AKC Celebrates 125th Anniversary with a Look Back at First AKC Registered Breeds in History

The most popular dog in America, the Labrador Retriever, took a bow along with America’s other top dogs – Yorkshire Terrier, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever and Beagle – as the American Kennel Club (AKC) unveiled the reigning Top 10 dog breeds in America based on its 2008 registration figures.

The event kicked off the AKC’s 125th anniversary year and included a look back at the original nine breeds registered (vs. 161 today) in 1884.

Dogs and puppies took center stage at the press conference while the Lab was presented with a huge cake in his likeness, honoring his position as "America’s Top Dog" and celebrating the AKC’s 125th birthday year. The remaining nine breeds were recognized with life-like cupcakes.
