Getting Started as a New PEC
A Public Education Coordinator, or PEC, is an appointed position within an AKC-affiliated club. Each club can only have one designated PEC, but many clubs have entire committees dedicated to public education. PECs usually chair these committees.
As PEC you serve as liaison between the AKC, your club and your community, and you are responsible for coordinating public education programs for your club. We know many of you wear different hats in your club. Keep in mind public education can be as simple as ordering AKC Responsible Dog Ownership bookmarks and dropping them off at a public library as a gift from your club or as involved as making presentations to school children about safe behavior around dogs. PECs also distribute responsible dog ownership literature at malls, pet fairs and dog shows, and sometimes organize annual all-breed fairs.
Public education shouldn't be a one-person job. Encourage your fellow club members to get involved. Share AKCommunicates! at your meetings. Let your fellow club members know about your activities and how your efforts impact your community. Invite them to join you!
The Public Education department sends new PECs a starter kit packed with information about launching programs, networking and obtaining positive media coverage for your club and activities. If you are interested in becoming your club's PEC, speak with your club officers. The Public Education department must receive all new PEC appointments on club letterhead. A club officer must sign the letter, and fax or mail it to the Public Education department.
The AKC does not mandate how PECs are appointed. Check with your club president if you are interested in representing your club as its PEC.
