DOGNY: America's Tribute to Search and Rescue Dogs

The Springfield Kennel Club "Challenge"

Since becoming the first member club to sponsor the AKC's charitable program, DOGNY - America's Tribute to Search and Rescue Dogs, the Springfield Kennel Club has expanded its efforts to continue supporting canine search and rescue organizations on a local, grassroots level. SKC has cheerfully issued a "challenge" to other Clubs to help their own communities and see what all the fun is about!

Springfield Kennel Club's sponsorship of the DOGNY dog "Galaxy" later inspired the Club to sponsor a real, live K9: Police Dog "Hammer." The Club first set about locating a dog with the qualities needed to serve on their police force. Once finding Hammer, SKC provided the funds to purchase the dog, supplied additional funding for his veterinary care and arranged for The Iams Company to provide a year's supply of Eukanuba Dog Food. Springfield Kennel Club's partnership with the Springfield Police Department has blossomed to include educational programs for children in their community. On August 14, 2003, the Club will be bringing an exciting activity day to their local Parks Department Summer Camp Program. The Club will conduct the AKC Dog Safety Program and will introduce some 300 children to the Springfield Police K9 Unit. The Police dog and handler teams will demonstrate how dogs like Hammer help keep their community safe on a daily basis.

Club President Sue Cohen states, "The Springfield Kennel Club would welcome other kennel clubs across the country to sponsor a K9 in their local community." As SKC has demonstrated, the opportunities for community involvement with our dogs are limitless.
