DOGNY: America's Tribute to Search and Rescue Dogs
Walgreen's Joins Hartz in the 2004 DOGNY Help A Hero Toy Program
The Hartz / DOGNY "Help a Hero" toy program received a new wave of support from Walgreen's, the national retail pharmacy chain and leader in innovative drugstore retailing.
At the February 19, 2004 Park Shore Kennel Club dog show, which kicked off the International cluster of dog shows in Chicago, AKC Chairman Ronald H. Menaker accepted a check for over $22,000 from Walgreen's for the AKC CAR Canine Support and Relief Fund. The donation represents Walgreen's support of the AKC's charitable program, DOGNY - America's Tribute to Search and Rescue Dogs. The donation was brought to fruition by Walgreen's and the Hartz Mountain Corporation, creator of the Hartz / DOGNY Help a Hero Toy program. The two versions of this popular collectible toy are available at Walgreens stores, online at akc.org, and at many other locations nationwide. For every toy sold, a dollar is donated to DOGNY through the AKC CAR Canine Support and Relief Fund to support professional and volunteer canine search and rescue organizations throughout the United States.
Mr. Menaker expressed these words of thanks to Walgreen's, Hartz, and our many friends in the dog community who have helped AKC and CAR support our nation's canine search and rescue organizations.
"It's wonderful to be here with friends from Hartz and Walgreen's in Chicago, at this terrific cluster of internationally known dog shows. I am pleased to have standing here with me Bernie Schwartz, Bill Peecy and Nancy Van Cura, of Park Shore, Little Fort and Chain O'Lakes Kennel Clubs, all members of the American Kennel Club and original sponsors of our charitable program, DOGNY - America's Tribute to Search and Rescue Dogs.
"Walgreen's and Hartz have invited us here today to present a check for DOGNY, which I am delighted to accept for the AKC CAR Canine Support and Relief Fund. In offering this contribution, Walgreen's joins the American Kennel Club in our commitment to canine search and rescue dog organizations throughout the United States.
"A K9 handler recently told me about how the profile of search and rescue dogs has changed since the terrible events of September 11, 2001. 'Prior to 9-11,' she said, 'the general public had little idea of what we do or the time, training and money it takes to get a dog mission ready. We really appreciate what the AKC has done to promote and explain what SAR dogs and handlers do and the commitment that this work takes. From the dogs, their handlers, and the communities that support them - Thank you!'
"We would be hard pressed to receive the many heartfelt expressions of gratitude like this one, were it not for the generous support of companies like Hartz and Walgreen's. On behalf of the American Kennel Club, I would like to express our thanks to Hartz and to Walgreen's, who has supported DOGNY with the purchase of the collectible Hartz/DOGNY "Help a Hero" Toys. In doing so, Walgreen's has helped AKC raise awareness for Canine Search and Rescue and offer financial support to these hard working volunteer groups in times of crisis or disaster. Thank you again for your support."
