From the Editor
Welcome to the inaugural issue of the Event Committee Bulletin, an official newsletter of the American Kennel Club's Event Operations Department!

The purpose of this newsletter is to provide increased assistance to event committees and offer suggestions of how to creatively adapt to and embrace the ever changing demographic of our fancy. Each Event Committee Bulletin will contain articles on various issues that may have an impact on the hosting of dog show events. The tools and guidance provided may potentially help you put on more efficient, enjoyable, and innovative events. It will also provide you with helpful contact information for multiple AKC departments, should you wish to offer additional suggestions or need further clarification. The definitive goal is to help your club better serve the fancy, while keeping you up to date on happenings at the AKC relevant to events.

The AKC and its constituencies are outstanding and extensive resources. If you look across the 125 year history of the organization, you will see an unwavering ability to adapt to change and grow for the greater good of dogs. The goal of the Event Committee Bulletin is to synthesize information about significant topics relative to events. You may incorporate as many or as few of these suggestions into your event preparation - whatever you feel is best. Having said that, do not be afraid to be bold and try something a little unconventional!

Currently, we are faced with many challenges that include anti-dog legislation, registration and entry declination, and waning exhibitor participation. These tumultuous times offer event committees an unprecedented opportunity to revamp the image of our sport! Strong leadership in your club's event committee will aid in hosting a well-organized event that serves as not only an enjoyable experience for long-time exhibitors, but also as a fun and educational introduction to the sport for those just starting out. It is imperative that the fancy become increasingly attractive to the public in order to draw in a new era of enthusiasts. Be creative and solicit fresh ideas from anyone eager to offer them in order to create a more inclusive and representative event committee environment. You never know - an innocent conversation with a fellow club member may inspire you.

We live in a complicated society, full of people who are unfamiliar with our sport. Consequently, we all have an equal responsibility to educate those who have misconceptions. One of the best ways to do that is to welcome them with open arms and show them what our world is all about. If the Event Operations department can be of any assistance, please contact us at .

Club Spotlight: Hangtown Kennel Club
It is with great pleasure that the Event Operations department recognizes the Hangtown Kennel Club of Placerville, California for outstanding emergency preparedness. Around 10:45 AM on May 25, 2008, a spectator, sitting with his wife at a picnic table, suffered a cardiac situation. "911" was called and the EMTs and Fire Department were on the scene within two minutes. Show Chair Sherry Howard, RN performed CPR until the EMTs arrived with defibrillator paddles. As a result of the club's emergency planning, a man's life was saved.

As recounted by Executive Field Representative, Anne Katona, the EMTs and Fire Department had the following to say after the incident:

"We have been the emergency contact for these fairgrounds for the past 24 years. This is the first time we have not had trouble getting to the person in trouble because of lack of planning for the activity taking place. The Hangtown KC members had the emergency route planned and in place for both the fire truck and the ambulance to get to the person the best it has ever been able to in these 24 years."
Shedding Light on the Mixed Breed Program
As many of you have heard by now, the AKC Board of Directors approved the implementation of a Mixed Breed Program. The establishment of this new and inclusive initiative will help to promote the aims and ideals of responsible dog ownership to those dog lovers who may have had no previous association with AKC. It will allow those who have a mixed breed to experience a new or increased partnership with AKC while furthering the well-being of our furry friends. This exciting opportunity will not only benefit AKC, but it will also help contribute to the rehabilitation of event entries. However, event committees must prepare to lay out some additional effort to make sure that the new Mixed Breed Program is well integrated and reaches its full potential. Read more.

Questions & Answers
Q: Once entries have closed for an event, can a dog still be entered?
A: No. The Rules Applying to Dog Shows Chapter 6, Section 9 does not allow entries to be accepted after the closing date has passed.

Q: How are points calculated if a dog is 'disallowed' by the AKC and not 'disqualified' during a show?
A: When dogs are disallowed by the AKC and not disqualified at the event, the dog will still be included in the count for points.

Q: How can a club determine the date of their show in the future?
A: If you are planning to hold an event on the same weekend in future years, please consult the corresponding date table.
Friendly Reminders
In the rush to complete event registrations, submit applications, judging panels, and show results, or deal with the multitude of issues that are involved with hosting an event, it is easy to forget a few things. Here are some friendly reminders regarding some common misunderstandings or misconceptions that the Event Operations department sees on a regular basis.

Obedience Presentation Available to Clubs
AKC Obedience: Now and Into the Future is now available on the AKC website.

Clubs are welcome to download the PowerPoint presentation and use it for club programs, public education events and other meetings. The Companion Events Department gave the presentation during the June 2009 Delegates meeting in Raleigh, NC, and received requests to make the program available for club use.

The presentation addresses the continuing decline in obedience entries and the AKC's new regulations and classes that have been enacted in an effort to combat that decline. Access the presentation here.
