CGC Evaluator Newsletter
March 2005

On behalf of the American Kennel Club, we'd like to take this opportunity to congratulate and thank all of you who have completed the new application process and passed the test for evaluators. We are committed to maintaining high standards for the AKC Canine Good Citizen® Program. The new approval process will be a great help and we are proud to be working with all of you.

After this initial March issue, EVALUATOR NEWS will be sent to all approved evaluators monthly. If you have any questions or issues that come up during a test that you'd like to see addressed in the newsletter, let us know by emailing or calling the CGC office at 919-816-3637.

The response to the new evaluator approval process was overwhelmingly positive. So positive, in fact, that if you called the CGC office in the last few weeks, there is a good chance you got an answering machine. We apologize for this and we are working to ensure that the phones will be answered by a person when you call. Sharon Wilson and Demond Hunt are the Event Operations staff who will be available to help you during business hours.

Some evaluators have called to ask if there will be any more changes to CGC in the near future. The CGC test won't change, but as a result of evaluator feedback, AS OF MARCH 2005, YOU NO LONGER HAVE TO SEND YOUR YELLOW TEST COPIES TO THE AKC. PLEASE KEEP THESE FOR AT LEAST ONE YEAR IN THE EVENT AN OWNER LOSES HIS/HER COPY. CONTINUE TO SEND IN THE ONE PAGE TEST SUMMARY FORM FOR EVERY TEST. We'll be checking owner test forms against these when issuing certificates.

Yellow copies were sent in originally because owners often called to say they got no copies of paperwork at the test and the evaluator told them the AKC would automatically send the certificate. We could refer to the evaluator's yellow copies and send the certificate. Now that the new screening process for evaluators is in place, we will be able to refer owners who have problems back to the evaluator. You'll have your copies and mailing only the one-page TEST SUMMARY FORM will be easier for you.

This shorter version of the newsletter will be used as a test to make sure everyone's email address is correct and that we have correct mailing addresses for non-computer evaluators. In upcoming issues, we'll talk about the reasons behind some of the recent program changes (e.g., not requiring proof of vaccines at CGC tests), we'll highlight specific CGC programs, frequently asked evaluator questions will be answered, and we'll periodically present some scenarios sent to us with the AKC's response. Let us know if there's anything you'd like to have covered.

So, here's to a new year. We are honored to be working with all of you. Thank you for all you do to make the lives of dogs and their owners better.
